What is the best fabric for sensitive skin?
For sensitive skin, the gentlest options are Tencel (lyocell), organic cotton, silk, and fine merino wool. Tencel is produced from sustainably harvested eucalyptus wood pulp using a closed-loop process, resulting in fibers that are incredibly smooth, breathable, and naturally hypoallergenic. Organic cotton, grown without pesticides or harsh chemical finishes, is another excellent choice because it minimizes contact irritation. Silk has natural proteins that are compatible with human skin and is often recommended by dermatologists for people with eczema or dermatitis.
Fine merino wool with a fiber diameter under 18.5 microns is surprisingly gentle and rarely causes the itchiness associated with coarse wool. It also has natural antibacterial and moisture-wicking properties that keep skin dry and reduce the conditions that trigger irritation. Hemp is another strong contender, especially when blended with cotton or Tencel to soften the hand feel.
At ONDU, many of the brands we carry, including Boody, Organic Basics, and Mate the Label, specialize in sensitive-skin-friendly fabrics. Our product categories make it easy to filter for garments that prioritize skin comfort without sacrificing performance.
