What is the best activewear for people with eczema?
For eczema sufferers, the ideal activewear minimizes friction, wicks moisture away from the skin, and avoids chemical irritants. Tencel (lyocell) is widely recommended by dermatologists because its smooth fiber surface reduces mechanical irritation, and its exceptional moisture management keeps skin dry, which is critical since sweat is a common eczema trigger. Fine merino wool under 18.5 microns is another strong choice as it naturally regulates temperature and prevents the overheating that often causes flare-ups.
Avoid polyester and nylon activewear if you have eczema. Synthetic fibers trap heat and moisture against the skin, creating the warm, damp conditions that worsen eczema symptoms. They also tend to harbor bacteria, leading to odor and potential skin irritation. Fabrics treated with chemical finishes like wrinkle resistance, stain repellency, or antimicrobial coatings (common on synthetics) can also trigger reactions.
At ONDU, we carry several brands that cater to sensitive and eczema-prone skin. Organic Basics uses GOTS-certified organic cotton and Tencel in many of their pieces, and Boody offers bamboo-derived viscose that is gentle and breathable. Our activewear listings clearly display fabric content so you can quickly identify pieces that are safe for reactive skin.
