Outdoor & Waterproofing

How do synthetic waterproof membranes compare to natural water-resistant fabrics?

Synthetic waterproof membranes like Gore-Tex, eVent, and Pertex Shield provide the highest level of absolute waterproofing available, keeping you dry in sustained heavy rain. They achieve this through microporous or hydrophilic film layers that block liquid water while allowing water vapor to pass through. However, most of these membranes historically used PFAS in their construction, though the industry is transitioning to PFAS-free alternatives.

Natural water-resistant fabrics like boiled wool, waxed cotton, and tightly woven Ventile cotton handle light to moderate rain effectively but will eventually soak through in sustained downpours. Their advantages include full biodegradability, no chemical coatings, superior breathability, and no microplastic shedding. They also do not require the periodic re-application of DWR coatings that synthetic membranes need to maintain performance.

The right choice depends on your activities. For extreme mountain conditions, a PFAS-free synthetic membrane may be necessary. For everyday commuting, dog walking, hiking in mild conditions, and general outdoor use, natural water-resistant fabrics perform excellently while avoiding the chemical and environmental costs of synthetic options. ONDU helps you match the right material to your actual needs rather than defaulting to over-engineered synthetics.
