Outdoor & Waterproofing

Can you get a waterproof rain jacket without PFAS?

Yes, PFAS-free waterproof jackets are increasingly available as outdoor brands respond to consumer demand and regulatory pressure. Several technologies provide effective waterproofing without fluorinated chemicals. Silicone-based DWR coatings, polyurethane membrane systems, and bio-based water repellents derived from plant waxes all offer functional rain protection.

Some traditional approaches also work well. Waxed cotton jackets, used by sailors and farmers for over a century, provide excellent waterproofing through natural beeswax or paraffin wax treatments. These can be re-waxed at home to maintain performance. Boiled wool, also known as loden cloth, is naturally water-resistant and has been used in Alpine regions for generations without any chemical treatment.

When shopping for a PFAS-free rain jacket, look for explicit statements about fluorine-free DWR or PFAS-free construction. Vague environmental claims like eco-friendly or planet-conscious do not guarantee PFAS-free status. Brands committed to transparency will specify the waterproofing technology used.
