PFAS & Forever Chemicals

What are PFAS-free alternatives to DWR waterproof coatings?

Several fluorine-free DWR (durable water repellent) technologies have emerged as alternatives to traditional PFAS-based coatings. These include silicone-based DWR, wax-based treatments, and bio-based alternatives derived from plant oils. Brands like Nikwax have offered fluorine-free waterproofing for years, and major outdoor companies are increasingly adopting C0 (zero-carbon fluorine chain) DWR formulations.

Natural materials also offer inherent water resistance without any chemical treatment. Waxed cotton has been used for centuries in maritime and outdoor clothing. Boiled wool (loden) is naturally water-repellent due to its dense, felted structure and the lanolin present in the fiber. Tightly woven fabrics made from Ventile cotton can resist rain without any coating at all.

When shopping for water-resistant gear, look for labels that specifically state PFAS-free or fluorine-free DWR. Avoid vague claims like eco-friendly water repellent without specifics. ONDU advocates for transparency in fabric treatments and favors brands that rely on natural fiber properties or verified fluorine-free technologies.
