Chemical Safety

What is the difference between OEKO-TEX and GOTS certification for safety?

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) both test for harmful chemicals in textiles, but they approach safety from different angles. OEKO-TEX tests the finished product for over 100 harmful substances including heavy metals, formaldehyde, PFAS, pesticides, and phthalates. It certifies that the end product is safe for skin contact regardless of how it was made. GOTS certifies the entire supply chain, requiring organic fiber content, restricting chemical inputs at every production stage, and mandating environmental and social standards.

For chemical safety, both are highly reliable. OEKO-TEX may be more practical for non-organic products since it does not require organic fiber content. GOTS provides a broader sustainability assurance because it covers farming practices, manufacturing emissions, wastewater treatment, and worker rights in addition to chemical testing. Both certifications are significantly more rigorous than US textile regulations.

For maximum protection, especially for babies and people with chemical sensitivities, look for products that hold both certifications. ONDU prioritizes brands with one or both of these certifications because they represent the highest available standard for textile safety and transparency.
