Chemical Safety

How does organic cotton differ from conventional cotton in chemical exposure?

Conventional cotton is one of the most chemically intensive crops, using approximately 16% of the world's insecticides and 7% of herbicides despite occupying only 2.4% of arable land. Residues from these agricultural chemicals can remain in finished fabric, though at low levels. More significantly, conventional cotton processing involves chlorine bleaching, formaldehyde-based wrinkle treatments, synthetic dyes, and finishing chemicals that make direct skin contact.

Organic cotton, certified under GOTS, is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers and processed without chlorine bleach, formaldehyde, or azo dyes. Every stage of the supply chain is audited and tested. The result is a fabric with significantly lower chemical residues that is gentler on both your skin and the environment.

For people with sensitive skin, eczema, or chemical sensitivities, the difference between organic and conventional cotton can be noticeable. ONDU features brands like Pact, Mate the Label, and Organic Basics that use GOTS-certified organic cotton, ensuring that the cotton touching your skin has been produced and processed to the highest clean-chemistry standards.
