How do I wash Tencel clothing?
Tencel (lyocell) is one of the easiest natural-origin fabrics to care for, but a few simple practices will keep it looking and feeling its best for years. Wash Tencel garments in cold or lukewarm water on a gentle or delicate cycle. Turn items inside out to protect the surface from friction, and use a mild, pH-neutral detergent without bleach or fabric softener. Fabric softeners can coat the fibers and reduce their natural breathability and moisture-wicking ability.
For drying, remove Tencel garments from the washer promptly to prevent wrinkling and either lay them flat on a drying rack or hang them to air dry. If you must use a dryer, choose the lowest heat setting and remove items while they are still slightly damp. High heat can cause Tencel to stiffen and lose its characteristic silky drape. A cool iron on the reverse side can smooth out any remaining wrinkles.
Tencel is naturally resistant to odor and bacteria, which means you do not need to wash it after every wear. Airing out Tencel garments between wears can extend the time between washes significantly, reducing wear on the fabric and saving water. Brands like Organic Basics and Pangaia that use Tencel specifically design their garments to take advantage of this low-wash property.
