How do I remove odor from natural fiber activewear?
One of the great advantages of natural-fiber activewear is that it resists odor far better than synthetics, but when odor does build up, there are effective natural solutions. Start with the simplest method: hang the garment in fresh air and sunlight for a few hours. UV light is a natural disinfectant, and air circulation disperses volatile compounds that cause smell. For merino wool and Tencel, this alone is often enough to refresh the garment without a full wash.
If airing out is not sufficient, try a vinegar soak before washing. Add one cup of white vinegar to a basin of cold water and soak the garment for 30 minutes. Vinegar neutralizes odor-causing bacteria without harming natural fibers. Alternatively, sprinkle baking soda directly on the affected areas, let it sit for an hour, then shake it off before washing as normal. For stubborn odors, a combination of both methods works well.
Avoid fabric softener and heavily scented detergents, as these mask odor rather than eliminating it and can actually trap bacteria in the fibers. Stick with mild, unscented detergent and cold water. Make sure garments dry fully between wears, as dampness is the primary breeding ground for odor-causing bacteria. Natural-fiber activewear from brands like Icebreaker and Reprise Activewear is specifically engineered to minimize odor retention, making maintenance straightforward.
