What does Cradle to Cradle certification mean for clothing?
Cradle to Cradle (C2C) certification evaluates products across five categories: material health, material reutilization, renewable energy use, water stewardship, and social fairness. For clothing, the material health assessment is particularly valuable because it screens every chemical input in the supply chain against a database of known hazards, assigning each an acceptable, problematic, or banned rating.
C2C certification goes beyond testing the finished product by requiring brands to understand and disclose the chemical composition of every material and process used. This level of transparency is rare in the fashion industry and provides strong assurance that harmful chemicals are excluded by design rather than simply tested for at the end.
The certification's emphasis on circular design also encourages garments that can be safely composted (biological cycle) or recycled (technical cycle) at end of life. Brands like Pangaia have pursued C2C certification to validate their material choices. While less common than OEKO-TEX or GOTS, Cradle to Cradle certification represents the most comprehensive approach to textile safety and sustainability available. ONDU values brands that invest in this level of scrutiny.
