What is OEKO-TEX certification and what does it guarantee?
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is one of the world's most widely recognized textile safety certifications. It tests finished textile products for over 350 harmful substances including formaldehyde, heavy metals, pesticides, phthalates, certain azo dyes, and PFAS. The certification is issued by independent testing institutes and must be renewed annually, with regular audits and random product testing to ensure ongoing compliance.
The certification uses a tiered system based on how close the product sits to the skin. Product Class I is the strictest and covers textiles for babies and toddlers, Class II covers items worn directly against the skin like underwear and bedding, Class III covers items not touching the skin directly, and Class IV covers decorative materials. This means an OEKO-TEX certified pillowcase or pair of leggings has been tested to a higher standard than a certified jacket, because the skin contact is more direct and prolonged.
While OEKO-TEX does not require organic or natural fibers—a polyester garment can be OEKO-TEX certified—it does ensure that whatever material is used has been screened for the most concerning chemical substances. When combined with natural fibers, the certification provides strong assurance. Many brands on ONDU hold OEKO-TEX certification, including Organic Basics for their activewear and Promeed for their silk sleepwear and bedding. It is one of the most practical labels to look for when shopping for safer textiles.
