What is FSC certification?
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification ensures that products made from forest-derived materials come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social, and economic benefits. In the context of fashion and textiles, FSC certification is most relevant for regenerated cellulose fibers such as Tencel (lyocell), modal, and viscose, all of which are made from wood pulp sourced from trees.
FSC-certified forests must meet rigorous standards that protect biodiversity, water resources, and the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities. The certification prohibits the conversion of natural forests to plantations, the use of hazardous chemicals, and the violation of workers' rights. There are three levels of FSC labeling: FSC 100% (all material from FSC-certified forests), FSC Mix (a mix of certified and controlled sources), and FSC Recycled (made from reclaimed material).
For ONDU shoppers, FSC certification is an important indicator when evaluating products made from wood-based fibers. Brands like Pangaia and Tentree source FSC-certified materials for their cellulose-based fabrics, ensuring that the forests supplying their raw materials are managed with long-term ecological health in mind. When paired with responsible manufacturing processes like the closed-loop systems used in Tencel production, FSC-certified fibers represent one of the most sustainable options available.
