Do period underwear contain PFAS forever chemicals?
Independent testing has found PFAS in several popular period underwear brands. A class-action lawsuit filed against Thinx in 2022 revealed elevated levels of PFAS in their products, and subsequent testing by journalists and advocacy groups found similar results across multiple brands. PFAS are used in the moisture-barrier layers to prevent leaks, but they come in direct contact with some of the most absorptive skin on the body.
The vulvar and vaginal area has thinner skin with higher permeability than most other body regions, meaning chemical absorption is significantly greater. Wearing PFAS-containing products in this area for extended periods, as is the case with period underwear, raises exposure concerns that have prompted calls for stricter regulation.
If you use period underwear, look for brands that have been independently tested and verified as PFAS-free. Check for OEKO-TEX certification, which includes testing for fluorinated compounds. Organic cotton underwear with separate reusable pads is another approach that avoids PFAS entirely. ONDU encourages informed choices about every garment that touches your skin.
