What's the difference between organic and regular cotton?
The core difference lies in how the cotton is grown. Conventional cotton is one of the most chemically intensive crops in agriculture, relying heavily on synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. It also frequently uses genetically modified (GMO) seeds. Organic cotton, by contrast, is grown without synthetic chemicals, GMOs, or toxic defoliants. Instead, organic farmers use crop rotation, beneficial insects, and compost to maintain soil health and manage pests.
The environmental impact gap is significant. Organic cotton farming uses up to 91% less water from blue water sources (rivers and groundwater) because healthier, organic-rich soil retains moisture far more effectively. It also eliminates the runoff of synthetic chemicals into waterways, which is a major environmental and health concern in conventional cotton-growing regions. For farmworkers and surrounding communities, organic farming dramatically reduces exposure to hazardous substances.
From a product perspective, organic and conventional cotton feel similar, though some people report that organic cotton is softer due to the absence of chemical residues. The key certifications to look for are GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), which covers the entire supply chain from farm to finished garment, and OEKO-TEX, which tests for harmful substances.
