Are natural-fill duvets healthier than synthetic alternatives?
Natural-fill duvets made from organic wool, down, or organic cotton batting offer health advantages over synthetic polyester-fill duvets. Synthetic duvets shed microplastic fibers into your breathing zone throughout the night and may contain flame retardants, antimicrobial treatments, and off-gassing chemicals from polyester production. Natural fills avoid these concerns entirely.
Organic wool duvets are particularly beneficial because wool naturally regulates temperature and humidity, keeping you in the optimal sleep climate without overheating. Wool absorbs moisture without feeling damp, reduces dust mite populations due to its natural properties, and is inherently flame-resistant. These properties eliminate the need for chemical treatments that synthetic duvets require.
Down duvets offer excellent warmth-to-weight ratio and breathability, though ethical sourcing is important. Organic cotton-fill duvets are hypoallergenic and lightweight. When choosing a natural duvet, look for GOTS certification for cotton and wool fills, or Responsible Down Standard (RDS) for down. ONDU recommends natural-fill bedding as a foundational element of a healthy, chemical-free sleep environment.
