How do I care for a silk pillowcase?
Silk pillowcases require a bit more attention than cotton ones, but the skin and hair benefits make the effort worthwhile. Wash your silk pillowcase every one to two weeks, or more frequently if you use heavy skincare products at night. Hand washing is the gentlest method: fill a basin with cool water, add a few drops of pH-neutral silk detergent, submerge the pillowcase, and swish gently for two to three minutes. Rinse thoroughly in cool water until all soap is removed.
For machine washing, place the pillowcase inside a mesh laundry bag, select the most delicate cycle with cold water, and use a silk-safe or gentle detergent. Avoid bleach, hot water, and enzyme-based detergents, as all of these degrade silk proteins and reduce the fabric's smoothness and luster over time. Never mix silk pillowcases with rough fabrics like denim or towels, as the friction can damage the silk surface.
To dry, lay the pillowcase flat on a clean towel or hang it in a shaded area with good airflow. Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade the color and weaken the fibers. Never tumble dry silk. If wrinkles bother you, use a steamer or a cool iron on the reverse side while the fabric is still slightly damp. With proper care, silk pillowcases from brands like Promeed will maintain their smooth, hair-friendly surface for a long time.
