Does hemp fabric shrink?
Hemp can shrink, particularly if it has not been pre-shrunk during manufacturing. Untreated hemp fabric may shrink up to 5% on the first wash, primarily in length. The extent of shrinkage depends on how the fabric was processed, whether it is a pure hemp or a blend, and how you wash and dry it. Blends of hemp with organic cotton or Tencel tend to have more predictable shrinkage since the blended fibers stabilize each other.
To minimize shrinkage, always wash hemp garments in cold water and avoid the tumble dryer, especially for the first few washes. Air drying flat is the safest method. If you do use a dryer, select the lowest heat setting and remove the garment while still slightly damp. After the first two or three washes, hemp fabric tends to stabilize and shrinkage becomes minimal.
One of the benefits of hemp is that it actually gets softer with each wash while maintaining its structural integrity. Unlike synthetics that break down over time, hemp fibers become more comfortable as they age. This makes any initial shrinkage a worthwhile trade-off for a fabric that improves with use and can last for decades with proper care.
